Obituary

Obituary for Sam R. Shultz

Samuel “Sam” Reneau Shultz, age 80, suddenly passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 17th 2019, at his home in Tomball, Texas.

He was born on December 28th 1938 in Houston, Texas at St. Joseph Hospital in “The Heights”, were he was raised. His parents, Lottie Lobland and Otto Shultz, brother Delbert, and son Kevin, precede him in death. He was married to Jackie Sawyer Shultz for many years and raised three children together. His three surviving children – Rhonda Tobin, Renee Zawacki and Brittany Spacek, will forever remember Sam, along with his son-in-law, Herman Zawacki, whom he considered his own son.

His five grandchildren – Karli Zawacki Moore, Trevor Zawacki, Dylan Tobin, Millie Spacek and Mylie Spacek, also survive Sam. He had several nieces and nephews: Leah, Mark, Blake & Amber, along with a lasting childhood friendship with Paul McCready and a special bond with Francis Erwin, among others who crossed his path in life.

At the age of 18, Sam enlisted into the US NAVY and served four years as a “Morse Code Operator”, serving on the USS Hancock (CVA-19). He traveled all over the seas as well as to Japan. He loved to share stories about time spent in the military and his love for his country was evident. Other interests included cars and fishing. Sam Shultz spent many years living along the Gulf Coast, mainly on the Bolivar Peninsula, where he enjoyed coastal living. He lived a full life.

A Military Service will be held on Tuesday, February 26th at 1:45 p.m. at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

Ann and I moved on a street in Oak Forest called Woodcrest back in the early 80's. We were in our early twenties then. We are now in our late 50's now. One day, this small boy rode up on his bicycle and said, "my dad wants to talk to you. He wants to see if you want to do some work at our house". That small boy was Sams son Kevin. After that day Sam and I became fishing buddies. We were blessed to be able to fish many places. Freeport, offshore, East bay, West bay, Port Mansfield, Baffin Bay, Port Isabel, Trinity River, San Jacinto River and even Lake Conroe. We made many many fishing trips and caught lots of fish and "Fish Stories". I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time down at Crystal Beach with Sam. We shared many bowls of his famous gumbo, fish fry's and many good memories. I learned a lot from Sam. What I know today about boats, boat motors, trailers, oils, additives and the mechanics of an outboard motor I owe to him. Thank you Sam. You will be greatly missed my friend.
