Obituary

Obituary for Pamela S. Steward (Smith)

Pamela Smith Steward
June 29, 1948 – November 9, 2019

Pamela Smith Steward, daughter of Paul James Smith and Mary Katherine Van Dyke Smith, passed from this life on Saturday, November 9, 2019 after a brief illness. A life-long Houston resident, Pam is survived by husband of 43 years, Billy J. Steward; sister Paula Morris and family of Houston, TX; cousins and families Becky White of Kerrville, TX, Suzi Smith Warzecha of Corpus Christi, TX, Hut Smith of Kerrville. TX, and Paul Brooks Gilmore of Katy, TX, along with many friends and students of her art classes.

Pam was a gifted artist, working in a variety of media including photography, alternative print processes such as cyanotypes and gum dichromate, as well as her first love, large scale oil paintings, works she could “climb into”. “I paint larger than life so I can fall into that world. To feel the sensation of free movement in cool, comforting space. To feel surrounded and held in the same instant I am feeling the freedom. I am creating a world I want to inhabit. The fear, the doubt, the holding back is always accompanied by the excitement of discovery, the enticing mystery of entering a new world with all its promise and wonder”.

Pam and Billy moved to the Houston Heights in the early years. They found a beautiful historic home, rich in character and did an extensive remodel, doing much of the work themselves and using local craftsmen. Pam’s joy of gardening is reflected in her engaging yard designs and backyard secret garden. The Sycamore tree was her favorite.

Pam had studio space in the David Adickes Winter Street building, later moving to a private studio. She designed beautiful oil paintings, photographs and deep friendships. She created circles of friendships with ease. Although private, she was genuinely present with each family member, friend and student, one of her most endearing traits.

Pam attended The University of Houston, St. Thomas University and, Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Glassell School of Art. Pam taught after-school art classes at the Art Studio on the Boulevard for many years, nurturing young artists from Pre-Kindergarten through High School, as well as teaching at their summer Mad Hatter Arts Camp.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 15, 1:30 pm, at Heights Christian Church, 1703 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Art Studio on the Boulevard, 1703 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008, for youth scholarships.
Please come dressed in comfortable clothes. This was Pam’s request.

Many years of friendship and shared activities with Pam will cement the paths we walked together. That she has left this existence before us is fate/predestination, chance, or God's will. I know that Pam loved life and would have chosen more time. I also know that she faced the end of her life with strength and dignity and grace. She entered whatever comes next with her typical quiet composure and courage. See you on the other side, my friend.
