Obituary for James Gee Guen

James left us to be with the Lord on March 21, 2020.

Born in Houston on August 14, 1954 to G. F. and Frances Guen, he was the oldest of 5 siblings. Always curious and knowledgeable, he graduated from the University of Houston with an Accounting Degree and Texas A & M University with an Economics degree. After Graduation, James went to work at Texaco as a liaison between the IT and the Accounting group, where he worked for over 20 years. He then worked as an IT analyst at the Fort Bend County Voter Registration Group, where he assisted in the acquisition of the Electronic Voter Registration equipment that is still used today. He retired from Fort Bend County in 2016.

James loved being with people. Always fun-loving and upbeat, he hosted game nights, leading friends and family in playing board games and playing cards - especially bridge, spades, and poker (his favorite). He was an avid collector of coins, stamps and memorabilia, and he was a coveted trivia team member.

James is preceded in death by his father G. F. Guen and brother-in-Law James L. Woo, and he is survived by his mother, Frances Guen; his siblings Edward Guen, Karen Woo, Judy Guen, and Betty Anderson; and his 3 nephews.

Planted in the area of greatest need

Lonni Chu And Aunt Helen

Ode to James Guen:
A photo would only tell so much of your tale
You stood solidly as an Asian American without fail
You did gamble a bit
And had a smile to your lips kind of wit
But it was family you valued most I would regale

I recall James on your visit to Northport
You were the steak and potatoes sort
Gave mom her first microwave
It was definitely all the rave
And mom tried to nuke water for 5 minutes like on a stove she tried to extort

And at the Jaws movie you had such fun
Watching us younger kids who were ready to run
And as the soundtrack built up suspense
And the shark opened wide his jaws so intense
Jame’s your laughter was evident you enjoyed what the story line spun…

At the Statue of Liberty I recall
The extra steps up the torch we both wouldn’t haul
All the way to the top round and round without windows the final feat
But going to Liberty Island was still kinda sweet
And seeing the Lion King later with cousins was nice all and all…

Later we were both looking for jobs around the same time
You got mom to Skype a little with Aunt Francis; that was your crime
You brought people together in the nicest way
And your younger self, seemed always at play
You’re like the extra “umph” in a coke; perhaps the squish of lime.

James Gee Guen You will be sorely missed
You went from Texas A&M to a Texaco tryst
And later did you add to the bad, bad chads?
As an elections engineer? Those incidents were not just fads.
Your life a testimonial that our world was kissed.

How can we say goodbye?
To wish you somewhere safe in heaven would be no lie.
Amidst all this pandemic and throughout many a year’s strife
You helped us to have a better life.
You were the big brother kind of guy

Thank you James, for being a part of our lives.
