Obituary

Obituary for Homer Vance Smith

Homer Vance Smith, a man of kindness, humor, and grace, completed the final chapter in one of the finest stories that has ever been told when he passed from this life on May 9, 2020. Homer, who always loved a good story, started his life in Gorman, Texas on September 12, 1941 and proceeded to weave a beautiful tale of his own that included love, success, and many friends and family members who will miss him dearly and will hold his memory close.

Homer is preceded in death by his mother and father, Wilson and Thelma Smith of Cisco, Texas, and his first wife, Georgia Kay Smith. He is survived by his second wife Jamie Anderson Smith, his brother Bobby Smith and wife Beverly, his two daughters from his marriage to Georgia, Stacey McIlroy and husband Charles and Meg Gonzales and husband Mark. He considered his stepchildren from his marriage to Jamie to be his own and he will be missed by Michelle Joseph and husband Sam, Kim Adams and husband Scott, Lisa Bauman, and Jeff Bauman and wife Daymeth. He was cherished as a granddaddy by Abby Landry and her husband Jake, Will McIlroy, Jake and Sam Gonzales, Spence and Annie Adams, and Tiffany Bauman. He loved his niece Christy Byrd and husband Tom, his nephew Robert Smith and wife Kristine as well as a number of great nieces, nephews, and many beloved friends from his youth, professional life, and church family.

Homer was raised in Cisco and graduated from Cisco High School before attending and graduating from The University of North Texas. He worked for most of his life as an insurance salesman, manager, and personnel manager with Southwestern and Transamerica Life Insurance Companies. His easy-going personality, personal integrity, and old-fashioned work ethic led him to perform many roles within the companies he worked for, but he will always be remembered as a man who gave every person the respect and recognition that only a true gentleman could provide.

Homer loved a good story almost as much as he loved to laugh. He was caring and thoughtful, wise and compassionate. He was a man of sincere faith and maintained a steadfast trust in his Christian beliefs. He leaves behind a legacy for his family, loved ones, and friends that will encourage us all to try to fill the void left in our community by the passing of a good man.

Homer’s family will gather for a memorial service at Chapelwood United Methodist Church after an appropriate amount of time to celebrate his life, and, if for no other reason, to tell a few of his favorite stories one more time.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Homer Smith’s name to The Gateway Academy in Houston, Texas (www.thegatewayacademy.org), a school for students with social and learning differences.
