Alton Montgomery

Alton Deauward "Monty" Montgomery, beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend went to be with his heavenly Father on October, 30, 2017 at the age of 93. He passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side. He was born on October 4, 1924 in Mexia, Texas, to Hubbard Walton and Esma Speer Montgomery. He graduated from Van High School in 1942 and went into the Air Force in April 1943. He served until May of 1946. He left for boot camp with four Van High School graduates and only Monty and Kenneth Garrett came back. They went through the three years of service together and remained friends all their lives. Visitation will be Thursday, November 2, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 at Willow Meadows Baptist Church and funeral services will be at the church at 10:00 a.m. on November 3. Burial, 1:00, at Angleton Cemetery. In 1946 Monty went to work for Humble Oil later to be Exxon and worked for them for forty years. He enjoyed his work wherever it took him. Matter of fact, he was a person that made the best of any situation and could befriend the unfriendly. As stated in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God." That scripture best describes him, because he was a peacemaker. In September 1953 Monty met Jo Ann Ludwick and he stated," it changed my life forever and although I loved to fish that was secondary to being with her." They married on October 9, 1954 in Angleton, Texas and were married 63 years. Monty became a Christian early in life. He was active at all the churches they were members. He loved to sing and read the scriptures and had such a quiet, gentle spirit. He was a Mason. He also loved to fish and listen to a good fishing story. Monty was preceded in death by his parents, Hubbard Walton and Esma Montgomery, his son, David Wayne, a brother, Bennie Walter, a sister, Abbie Syble Esskew and her husband, J. D. Esskew. His favorite in-laws, Philip and Zora Fay Ludwick, brother-in laws, Wayne and Max Ludwick and sister-in-law, Marie Ward. Monty stated, "I would not change a thing. I do not think anyone could have been any happier than I have been." Monty is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jo Ann, and six nieces and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to family, neighbors, caregivers, and church family that helped so much in the last few months.
