Barry Borlinghaus valiantly fought to rid himself of cancer, but gains earlier in the year were met with his condition worsening in March. Barry passed away peacefully on June 17, 2020 with Debbie at his side.
Barry is survived by his wife, Debbie Borlinghaus; daughter, Brandy Santee; son, Joshua Borlinghaus; step-daughter & son-in-law, Alyssa & Mark Ruiz; granddaughters, Kendall & Kamryn Santee and Zowie Ruiz; brothers & sisters-in-law Roger & Jeannie, Garry & Cynthia Borlinghaus and Bill & Margie Yost plus a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, their children and very dear friends. His parents, Roger and Virginia Borlinghaus and step-daughter, Breanna in preceded him in death.
Twins Barry & Garry were born in Peoria, Illinois but got to Texas as fast as they could when father's job moved the family to San Antonio. He graduated high school a proud Brahma and member of Jr ROTC. Bowling was a favorite pastime he shared with his parents and he was quite good at it! In his early work career, he became a licensed gemologist and learned the 'ropes' of the jewelry business before opening his own store "Love Diamonds". Later, a career change landed him in the IT industry with brother Roger's "ComputerHaus". His strong attention to detail led him into network architecture and ultimately project management with EMC before his 2017 retirement.
Family, Faith and Friends were paramount throughout Barry's life. Barry proudly became Daddy to Brandy in 1983 and again to Josh in 1986. Look at any picture of him holding, feeding, playing, reading, swimming or swinging Brandy or Josh and there is no doubt how much he adored his "Flea" and "Tiger". His family blended with his marriage to Debbie, then welcoming Breanna and Alyssa. Barry was each of their biggest fans attending, rooting for & recording every sport event, vocal and dance recital possible. Blessings came in three's when he became "Papa" in 2006 to Zowie and Kendall and then Kamryn in 2008. He found great joy spending time with Papa's girls whether it was putting puzzles together, playing games, swimming, shopping, swinging or just being silly.
The holidays were huge favorites, especially Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas and Barry could top Clark Griswald with his exterior lighting feats! Costuming for annual parties allowed him to channel his inner super hero or character with favorites such as Ironman, Batman & Jack Sparrow and he took away more than one trophy for his efforts. His great escape was movies. SiFi, action adventure and westerns topped his list. He would watch them over and over as if for the first time and could quote many lines from John Wayne movies, Star Wars, Star Treck, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Austin Powers and more!
As happy empty nesters, Barry & Debbie were happiest spending time with friends and neighbors, traveling, country western dancing, camping or attending concerts & festivals. He lived a life he loved and loved the life he lived.
We will miss his love, guidance, friendship, sense of humor, impeccable dress and sparkling blue eyes. Although sometimes quiet, he was always thinking. We picture him in heaven breathing easy, relaxing, reading the daily news, fishing, sketching or creating a schematic for a holiday lighting project or dreaming up his next Halloween costume.
