Carolyn Joan Belk (née Wilson), age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at her Houston home surrounded by loved ones. She was born May 15, 1939 in Liberty, TX to Henry Carroll and Ruth Wilson and was raised in Dayton, TX. She was a graduate of Dayton High School and Sam Houston State Teachers College.
Carolyn met the love of her life, Rayford Belk, after being set up on a date by her college suitemate and his roommate during his homecoming at Stephen F. Austin University. They were married for 57 years and were long-time residents of Oak Forest in Houston.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Ray; children, Stephen, Shelly, and Paul; granddaughter, Connie; sister, Kathy, and niece, Katie. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Harold; son-in-law, Matt; and daughter-in-law, Mandy. She is preceeded in death by her mother and father and infant older bother, James David.
Carolyn devoted her life to elementary education, retiring from Durham Elementary where she was known as a calm and loving teacher. She was an active member of St. Stephen's UMC, Delta Kappa Gamma society for professional women educators, book club, and enjoyed playing bridge. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and was a member of the Swedish Club of Houston. In her retirement, Carolyn enjoyed traveling with Ray and spending time with her family. She was known for her deeply caring heart and kindness toward all that she met. She will be incredibly missed by all that knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. on November 20, 2019. Rev. Nathan Lonsdale Bledsoe will officiate.
