Donald P Howard

 

After his service in the Navy, Don embarked on a distinguished career as an electrical engineer. He made his mark in the ocean drilling industry where he worked on oil rigs and drill ships. He brought a depth of knowledge from his prior work in shipyards and the Navy that served him for decades to come. As a result, co-workers often consulted him and respected his opinions in all areas. He directly contributed to two patents and received national recognition in the ocean drilling industry. He was nothing short of brilliant.

 

Don's love for work was only surpassed by his love for his family. His happiest days were undoubtedly his first date with Barbara, his wedding day, and the birthdays of each of his four children. In 1988, he built a massive half pipe skateboarding ramp in the backyard. Measuring 8'X16'X32', it became a pilgrimage site for skateboarders from everywhere east of the Mississippi River. As he welcomed grandchildren to the family, his love only grew. From concerts to soccer games, he enjoyed every minute watching "squirts" play and celebrating with his patented duck call.  He always found ways to make those around him feel special. He called each of his children on their birthdays, timing the call to match the time of their birth and offering to make their favorite homemade pie to celebrate.

 

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Jean. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Howard, son Paul Howard (Mimi Howard), daughters Meredith Howard (Leslie Schradin), Emily Howard, and Megan Howard (Florence Montemayor), sisters Gail Howard and Kathy Reeb (Bobby), grandsons Hasan, Josiah, Paolo, and Alim, granddaughters Nova and Opal, one niece and several nephews. He will be missed by family, friends and co-workers. He was a devoted husband and father, beloved uncle, and valued co-worker. We have lost a brilliant, kind and loving man.
