Dorothy Jean Crumpton, née Johnson, was taken from us by the sudden recurrence of cancer at her home, surrounded by her loving boys, on October 25, 2019.
She was born on March 11, 1947 in Alexandria, Louisiana to her parents Ben Johnson and Ethel Mae Swain. A passionate and highly intelligent child, Dorothy was a natural leader. Mrs. Swain moved Dorothy and her siblings to Denver, Colorado, where Dorothy graduated from Manual HS. She earned an associate's degree in Business Management from Metropolitan State College.
She married Andre Brock in 1967, giving birth to their sons André Jr. and Kevin. After divorcing Andre in 1972, Dorothy finally returned to Alexandria in 1981 after a brief courtship with Arlester Scott to raise her third son, Courtney, with his brothers. She went back to school, earning a cosmetologists license in 1984, and became a very successful beautician.
In 1989, Dorothy moved herself and Courtney to Houston, TX. After regaining her sobriety in 1990 she earned a certificate as a substance abuse and chemical dependency counselor, where she dedicated herself to working with and mentoring young women seeking recovery from addiction. She remained sober until her last day on this Earth.
She married Carl Crumpton in 2002; they lived happily together until his untimely passing in 2010. She continued to work as a substance abuse counselor, even after her initial bout with ovarian cancer in 2016, until her time was near.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Alicia; her parents Ben Johnson and Ethel Mae Reed; and her brothers Clifton "Buddy" Johnson and Dennis Reed.
She will be cherished by her children André Brock, Kevin Brock, and Courtney Johnson; her siblings Ethel Marie Reed and Ronnie Reed; her loving nieces Vanessa Reed and LaToya Johnson and nephew Dwayne Majors, and four grandchildren: Ryan Brock, Lauran Autry, Gabriel Brock, and Jayla Brock. Her memory will be held dear by her great aunt, Cecil Swain; her cousins Fern Webster, Cornelius Swain, Maxine Williams-Bell, Barbara Ann Price, Deidre Price, Barbara Jean Sampson, Lawrence "Butch" Swain, and a host of younger cousins, other relatives, as well as her best friend in life and recovery, Miss Judy Bridges.
A memorial service will be held on November 1, 2019 from 7pm - 9pm at Integrity Funeral Care (3915 Dacoma Street Suite E) in Houston TX.
Special thanks to Dr. Khanh Nguyen and his excellent staff in managing my mother's health during her last decade. Without you, we might have lost her much sooner.
