Garland Smith

September 14, 1954 — April 20, 2019

Garland Ashely Smith, age 64, passed away April 20, 2019 in the comfort of his home with family and friends after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. Born in Magnolia, Texas in 1954, he was the son of Clyde Smith and Irma Smith and younger brother to Wayne Smith. He graduated in 1973 from Magnolia High School, where he was involved in student activities and was captain of the football team where he played both linebacker and fullback as #44 for the Bulldogs. He served seven years as a law enforcement officer for the Houston Police Department before going into the financial services industry. He became a certified financial planner while working for over twenty years at American Express Financial Advisors. Garland was an avid hunter, enjoying the brisk weather of the fall, although it could be said more time was spent with friends around the campfire, telling tall-tales and sharing pints of whiskey. He also enjoyed golfing, playing poker, and cheering on his Astros and Texans. Garland will be remembered for a wicked sense of humor, his sharp mind, and love for his friends and family.
Garland is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Cynthia Pearl Smith, or "CP" as he affectionately called her, and his daughter, Talena Renee Smith, his son-in-law Rick Merritt, as well as two very spoiled cats, George and Clyde. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Smith, sister-in-law Peggy Smith, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irma, and father, Clyde.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 29, 2019, 10:30 am at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 11330 Louetta Rd, Houston, TX 77070. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the American Cancer Society or Lakewood United Methodist Church.
