George Ira Curtis, born in Brasher Falls on August 9th, 1946 passed away in Debakey VA ICU in Houston, Texas on the morning of Saturday, June 3rd at 70 years old. After growing up on his family farm, he was drafted into the Vietnam war. For his service he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, and 2 Purple Hearts. Eventually he settled in the town of Massena, holding numerous posts in the local community's veterans' organizations including the VFW and the AmVets. Although a man of many talents, he dedicated the last years of his working career to advocating for job placements for veterans by working for the Department of Labor in his home community. George was a survivor who valued nothing more than getting to live his life on his own terms. Along with his heroism during wartime he survived prostate cancer, a major spinal surgery, and had most recently been recovering from a series of strokes. A man of simple pleasures, he enjoyed traveling to Texas to avoid the cold winter months up North, and made many friends in the community in Conroe, TX as well. As anyone who knew George already knows - he loved to talk, he had an opinion for every occasion, he amassed a small collection of elephant decorations wherever he lived, he valued being able to grab a beer with his friends, and his favorite way to show his generosity and love for others was to cook for them. Many of his friends and family can recall fantastic home-cooked meals and desserts hand-delivered to them, and could probably complain about the weight-gain from the rich food after! George is survived by his son, Bradley Curtis and his two daughters, Amber Curtis and Mandi Curtis, as well as his sister, Nancy Curtis. At this time, there is not yet a set plan for a memorial, but another announcement will be made when one is arranged. The Curtis family extends their thanks and best wishes to George's longtime friends in the North Country.
