Hamilton Browne

October 4, 1944 — December 27, 2019

Joseph Hamilton ‘Ham' Browne, 75, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2019 in the company of immediate family.

Ham was born on October 4, 1944 in Houston to Glenn and Hortence (Adams) Browne. He was a 1963 graduate of Alvin High School. Ham received his BBA in Accounting from the University of Houston (UH) in 1974 and practiced public accounting for nearly 40 years in the greater Houston area. On August 24, 1969, he married Bobbie Jo Lytle. They raised two daughters, Jennifer and Courtney.

Ham was known for his sense of humor and his long, entertaining stories, which he loved to repeat often. Many involved his daughters or his two grandchildren, for whom he adored and took extreme pride.

Ham also loved to recount his time as a DeMolay in his youth, where he served as one of three summer assistants at the International Supreme Council Headquarters in 1964 and obtained the Degree of Chevalier. His enthusiasm for community and leadership led him to serve as devoted member and past president of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg (Houston).

All who knew Ham will recall his tremendous pride and undying passion for his alma mater. One of his favorite pastimes was rooting for his beloved Houston Cougars-from the sidelines, both home and away; traveling with the team; and in most recent years, from his couch. He was a lifetime member of the UH Alumni Association and maintained close friendships with many of his brothers of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

In addition, Ham loved all things James Bond, the comedy of Steve Martin, and Blue Bell homemade vanilla ice cream. Through numerous strokes and medical complications, he held his humor to the end.

Ham was preceded in death by his father Glenn Mason Browne, mother Hortence Ann Browne, eldest brother Glenn Browne Jr. and sister Sharron Turpin.

Ham is survived by his wife Bobbie Browne; his daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Sean Reilly; his daughter Courtney and her husband, Gregory Banet; and grandchildren Daniel and Claire Banet.

Ham will also be fondly remembered by his brothers, Morris Browne and his wife, Charlene; Malcolm Browne and his wife, Florence; and Paul Browne; as well as his brothers-in-law Richard Turpin and Paul Lytle, and sisters-in-law Candy Duggins, Carol Fuller, and Nancy Strange.

Other survivors include his nieces and nephews, Clifford Browne, Traci Torres, Shawn Hovis, Kevin Regan, Mason Browne, Rachel Browne, Erika Browne, Paul Andrew Browne, Eric Browne, Russell Duggins, Robert Duggins, John Duggins, Sheri Bailey, Kathi Duggins, Johnny Brumlow, Bobby Brumlow, Nancy Burdick, Kristi Honeycutt, Paul Lytle Jr., Cody Lytle, Scott Burroughs, Bradley Burroughs, and Kelsey Strange; as well a cadre of devoted friends and fellow Houston Cougar fans.
