Irving Mermel, 92, died at his home in Houston on June 6. He had worked as a CPA in Houston for many years, primarily in his own practice, until his retirement four years ago. A native of Chicago, Irving served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, piloting Martin B-26 bombers from bases in Tunisia and Sardinia. He moved to Houston in 1946 after marrying Houston native Ann Rauch, a marriage which lasted until her death in 1994. He is survived by a son, Greg Mermel of Chicago, Illinois, and by three nephews, a niece, their spouses and children: Fred Wolgel and Julie Landis, Ph.D of Bellaire; Sanford and Regina Wolgel of Skokie, Illinois; Sheldon and Michele Wolgel of Ma'alei Adumim, Israel; and Michele Rose and Bert Tovrog of Wheeling, Illinois; and by other extended family. Memorial gatherings of family and friends will be held in Houston and Chicago at later dates. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a non-religious charity of the donor's choice.
