James Lynn Phillips of Houston, Texas Born February 14, 1934 died May 18, 2018 age 84. Survived by his ex-wife Patricia Phillips; Sister, Linda Sullivan of Athens, Georgia; four children, Margaret Allen of Austin, Texas, James Phillips Jr. of Houston, Texas, Jeffrey Phillips of Houston, Texas, & Janet Shorback of Brookeville, Maryland; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. His family surrounded Jim at the time of his peaceful passing at Memorial Herman Hospital, Houston, Texas. Jim was born in Clinton, Illinois, and a graduate of Central High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1952. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1953 and served valiantly and meritoriously in the Korean War. The US Marine Corps honorably discharged Jim in 1956 attaining the rank of Sergeant (E-4). Jim was ceremoniously awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Medal (Korean War), Korean Service Medal with honor and Good Conduct Medal. Upon completion of his Honorable service, Jim returned to Baton Rouge to attend LSU where he met Pat and wed in 1958. Jim graduated in 1960 from the School of Agriculture with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Upon graduation, Jim set off on a long and dedicated career in public service and a lifetime alumni supporter of LSU. After a short stint in the public sector, Jim joined the IRS in 1962. After 27 years of service and achieving the rank of GS-13, Jim retired and was ceremoniously provided the Andrew Gallatin award (the highest award provided to any Department of the Treasury employee). Jim was a member of Society of American Foresters since 1961 and a member of the Texas Forestry Association since 1964. Jim was also an active member of The Sons of the American Revolution. After retirement, Jim traveled the world, spent quality time with his children and grandchildren right up to the day he passed. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, hunting wild game, tennis and visiting with his friends and family. Jim was especially proud of his grandchildren and blessed to have much of his family close by. A military ceremony will be conducted on June 1, 2018 10:15am at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A remembrance lunch will be held following the ceremony at 11:30am at Carrabas, 11339 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079. Friends are welcome to attend.
