Karen Raley

July 4, 1957 — May 20, 2019

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Lewis Raley on May 20, 2019, after a courageous 14 month battle with leukemia. She left this world in comfort and peace, surrounded by her family. In her own words, she has left us for her "next great adventure."

She was generous, passionate, and unwavering. Karen was a dynamic educator for over 35 years. She saw potential and greatness in all of us. Above all, she encouraged us to look for something new and exciting in any situation.

Karen was brilliant, intuitive, and often impossibly energetic. She was always on the hunt for an excellent recipe to try, a plant to grow, or a craft project to undertake. Her ability to envision and create a masterpiece from the most simple accouterments was prodigious.

The greatest joy in Wowo's life came from spending time with her grandchildren; "Clay," "OE," "Maddey," and "Coco." She has been an integral part of their lives, and because of her, they have thrived. Wowo will be missed more than words can express.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Diane Lewis Mason, mother, Doris Wheeler Lewis, and father, Curtis Lewis.

Karen is survived by husband, Benney Raley, daughters, Melissa Deem, and Bonney Monjaras, son-in-law, Danny Monjaras, grandchildren, Mason Monjaras, Owen Deem, Layla Monjaras, and Cora Deem, sisters Connie Estes (Danny) and Dr. Gale Meador (Greg), and many treasured nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank MD Anderson Cancer Hospital and Bayes Achievement Center for the love, kindness, and friendship they provided Karen.

There will be a private family gathering to celebrate her life. The challenge we all face in her absence is the impetus to seek out our own great adventures. In honor of Karen, take a moment to do something you love and that makes you happy...life is too short to wait until tomorrow!
