With profound sadness we announce the passing of Larry Dean Simmons, age 71 on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Tx after a sudden onset of Liver Cancer. Larry was surrounded by his Wife and companion of 10 years, Irma Felczak and Son, Christopher Simmons during his last hours.
Larry was born in Houston, TX to Needham Henry Simmons and Helen K. Simmons. He had two sisters and three brothers. As a young adult, he would help his brothers work on cars, and he credits his country dancing skills to his sister, Gay Nell who taught him fancy spins and twirls to “wow” the girls. He was drafted into the United States Army and served his country, he was honorably discharged in March of 1974.
Larry traveled and lived in Florida for a bit. Since May 2009 to present, Larry assisted his brother Mike Simmons run M.J. Simmons Electric Company, Inc. They helped many businesses and individuals with their electrical needs in Houston, TX.
Larry was a proud father and grandfather, and told anyone within earshot about how proud he was of his son, Christopher and all that he’d accomplished and his grandson Matias was his pride and joy!
Larry was very routine and a planner, he took great care of anything he owned from his clothes, vehicles and his home, they were well maintained, clean, crisp and in order. Larry can be best known for taking pride in grooming his hair. He was blessed to still have a full head of healthy hair. Larry enjoyed meeting others and often quickly made friends by always saying something funny. In addition to dancing, Larry loved to sing and play guitar. He was known to engage in “jam sessions” from time to time with his buddies at the bar he frequented, “The Spot.” Larry’s favorite color was blue, his favorite type food was BBQ and Steak and potatoes. Approximately, 10 years ago, Larry met Irma Felczak at the Spot when she was in town visiting from San Antonio, since that time they have dedicated the rest of their lives to each other. In the evenings Larry would relax by watching TV and drinking beer. On the weekends, he and Irma would frequent the Spot to spend time with friends.
Many people never even knew Larry had cancer, he was never one to have people fuss over him, he still did the things he needed to do. He confronted cancer head on and lived courageously with it until the very end. By inspiring and teaching us, he won his battle in other very important ways. He was a wonderful role model right to the end.
Larry joins his, parents, Needham and Helen Simmons, sisters, Alice Greene and Gay Nell James in heaven. He is survived by his wife and companion, Irma Felczak, his son, Christopher Simmons and wife Diana, his brothers, Kenneth Hearn, Richard Simmons and wife Donna, Mike Simmons and wife Margie, he is also survived by his, grandson, Matias Simmons, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.
