Lewis Landsman

June 7, 1938 — January 29, 2022

Lewis Arthur Landsman (Papa Lew), 83, resident of Bentwater, Texas, went to be with his Messiah on the Sabbath, January 29th, in Houston, Texas.

Lewis was born in Rockville Center, New York, to Jerome and Sadonia Landsman on June 7, 1938. His family, in the grand tradition of American Jews, moved from New York to Florida when he was a boy. Lewis graduated from Miami Beach High School and received a scholarship to play football at the University of Houston. He was an officer in the United States Army. He worked as an optometrist for over 51 years. During his career, he was a clinical instructor and led the Contact Lens Department at the University of Houston. He also earned three fellowships and opened four eye clinics across Texas. His patients praised him as the most adept and compassionate doctor they had ever experienced.

He met his Messiah Yeshua at the age of 23 and lived the rest of his life in adoration and devotion. He loved his Lord God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. He served faithfully at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manvel, Texas, before going on to be a founding member of his synagogue, Congregation Beth Messiah.

Lewis is survived by his wife Dolores Marie Landsman, 86. She was three years his senior, though he led her to believe he was older until after she agreed to marry him. Dolores was the treasure of Lewis’ life, and they displayed the love of God here on earth throughout their 61-year marriage.

Lewis is also survived by his five children and their families:
- Lisa and Greg Ostrowski and their children Olivia (husband Gerrit) and Micah
- Judi and Ray Malone and their children Jarid (wife Lauren) and Jayde (husband Kyle)
- Lori and Charles Polsen and their children Kristen (husband James), Lauren, and Ashley
- Nicki and Larry Hutchins and their children Rachel (husband Jack), Leslie, Sydney, and Chase
- Lewis and Monica Landsman and their children Miranda (husband Agustin), Sarah, Anthony, Emily, and Nathanael

Lewis has eleven great-grandchildren: Caroline, Jacob, Kyle, Russel, Jude, Taylor, Liam, Mason, Ella, Ainsleigh, and Lev. For his adoring children and grandchildren, it is easy to believe in the unconditional love of the Father God, because Papa Lew was the embodiment of that love here on earth.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Sadonia Landsman, his stepfather, Max Orloff, and his brother, Allan Landsman.

Lewis will be remembered as a boisterous laugher, tenderhearted patriarch, and fount of Biblical wisdom. The celebration of life service will be held at Congregation Beth Messiah on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 10 am with Rabbis Richard Freeman and Ron Aaronson.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to Congregation Beth Messiah. The family wishes to extend gratitude to the staff at Houston Methodist Hospital for caring for him during his final days here.

“We are confident, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and at home with the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 5:8

“From Adonai a man’s steps are made firm,
when He delights in his way.
Though he stumble,
he will not fall headlong,
for Adonai is holding his hand.

Notice the man of integrity and watch the upright—
for the future of that man is shalom.”
Psalm 37

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom
and the man who gains understanding.
For her trade-value is better than silver,
and her yield better than fine gold.
She is more precious than jewels
and nothing you desire compares to her.
Length of days is in her right hand.
In her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all of her paths are shalom.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her,
and blessed will be all who hold firmly to her.”
Proverbs 3:13-18
