Marilyn embarked on her educational journey at Michigan State University, where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta and pursued a degree in Elementary Education. Graduating in 1956, she relocated to Long Island, NY. During her time as a teacher in Garden City, she was introduced to Cadet Maurice “Mike” Hazelrigs, a student at the United States Military Academy. They married on July 27, 1957. The ensuing military life led to extensive travel and frequent relocations. The couple welcomed their son Michael “Mike” in 1958 and their daughter Kathi in 1962.
In 1966, the Hazelrigs family transitioned to civilian life, settling in Houston, Texas, where they became integral members of the NASA community. Marilyn spent the rest of her life in Houston, re-entering the workforce in the early 1980’s working for Sandefer Oil & Gas and later Vinson & Elkins Law Firm until her retirement in 2003.
Marilyn is survived by her children, son Mike Hazelrigs (Kathy) of Houston, Texas, and daughter Kathi Hazelrigs Martin (Robert) of Katy, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ashley Reynal Kerr (Chris), Lauren Hazelrigs Krogman (Kai), and Wesley Reynal (Eva). She is also survived by her sister, Cynthia Everett (Fred) in addition to numerous nieces and nephews across the country.
Marilyn will be laid to rest at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, MI alongside family members. Graveside services are pending at this time.
In lieu of flowers, those inclined to honor Marilyn's memory are invited to make donations to the animal charity of their choice.
