Nell Meyer

September 22, 1924 — November 23, 2016

Nell Louise DeWitt Wilkins Meyer of Clute, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 23, 2016 at the age of 92. Born in Missouri in 1924, Nell saw many changes in the world in her 10 decades of life. Mama Nell, or Grandma Nell, as her grandchildren called her, cherished those changes in her life and family, especially watching her four boys grow up and become fathers to families of their own. Nothing was more important to her than her family. Nell regularly hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas; nothing brought her more joy than having her family together. Her second true passion was plant life and her knowledge was extensive. She spent hours in her greenhouses and gardens cultivating flowers, vegetables and herbs, eventually turning her interests into a business, leasing plants to a variety of businesses and office buildings in the Brazosport area. She was also well known for her artistic genius in sewing and quilting, capturing several competitive awards. Nell had an adventurous can-do spirit. She became a licensed pilot after making the required solo flight in a small plane. She and her first husband Russell Wilkins, Sr., cleared the land and built their first home themselves with hand made concrete blocks. She later expanded the house many times, supervising the work herself, while always leaving room for her garden and greenhouses. She was a woman of strong character whose optimism and good humor never failed her as she faced the hardships and trials of her live. Nell gave generously of her time to the community, working part-time as the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce, was a recipient of the SCORE Platinum Leadership Award and a regular volunteer at the food pantry through her church, the Wesley First United Methodist Church in Clute. She served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop leader for each of her sons and volunteered at their schools, all the while, managing a 30-year career in the patent department of Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas. Nell Meyer is preceded in death by her parents, William and Florence DeWitt, her brother Sonny DeWitt, sister Virginia Coots, her first husband, Russell Wilkins, second husband, Earnest Meyer, her long-time companion Kenneth Gonzales and her son, Eric Wilkins. She is survived by her sister, Billie Pirtle, sons; Russell Wilkins, Jr., and his wife Suzi, Randy Wilkins and wife Mary, Bill Meyer and wife Cheryl, daughter-in-law Tamara Wilkins, Paul Gonzales and wife Barbara, Sandra and George King, grandchildren; Russell Wilkins, III, and wife Reagen, Wendy Fry, Megan Meyer, Kate Wilkins, Shevyn Roberts and Erica Wilkins, and great-grandchildren; Raelee Wilkins, Ross Wilkins, Hannah Fry and Haleigh Fry. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Wesley First United Methodist Church, 1 Wesley Drive, Clute, Texas, 77531.
