Raymond Bynum Jr.

September 2, 1938 — October 18, 2018

Raymond T. Bynum, Jr., age 80, died October 18, 2018 in Houston which was his home the past eleven years. He was born in Abilene on September 2, 1938 at the original Hendrick Hospital. He was the son of Dr. ("Professor") Raymond T. Bynum and Mary Catherine Adamson Bynum. He attended College Heights Elementary, North Junior High School and graduated at Abilene High School in 1956. He attended McMurry College (now University), Rice University and received his degree from McMurry in 1960. He also received his ThM from Princeton Seminary in 1965.

Raymond was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as an associate pastor in New Jersey the 1960's.

Ray lived in Houston for many years where he was employed in the hotel / restaurant industry. He worked for the Shell Plaza Club, the Adams Mark Hotel and was the maitre d'hotel at the Houstonian Club.

Ray returned to Abilene in 1996 and became a substitute teacher for the Abilene School District during the tenure of Dr. Charles Hundley. He taught mostly at Abilene High School. Many teachers especially requested "Mr. Bynum" to substitute for them as he was knowledgeable in so many subjects. In addition to his teaching, which he thoroughly enjoyed, Ray worked as a waiter at Cypress Street Station each evening. This was exciting to him as he renewed acquaintances with many of his parents' friends as well as made new friends of his own. Ray's professionalism was unsurpassed and he served as a mentor to many young people in the industry throughout his club and restaurant career.

One of Ray's great loves each spring and summer was his vegetable garden. He was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed biographies. He could converse quite intelligently on many subjects.

Those who will miss Ray's love and companionship include two sons Geoff Bynum and his wife D'Anne of Katy, Texas; Greg Bynum of Spring, Texas and his daughter Barbara Alice Lacy of Bedias, Texas; two sisters Anne Bynum Schneider and her husband Louis and Sue Avary of Houston along with his brother Dr. William A. Bynum and his wife, Dr. Helen Bynum of London, England. There are 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

The entire Bynum Family would like to express its love and appreciation to Brookdale Memorial Oaks Senior Living Center in Houston for its tender love and care of Ray for the past eleven years.
