Richard Henry Lotspeich ~ age 76 of Tomball, Texas passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, Texas on Saturday, August 27, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with multiple complications due to congestive heart failure. He never stopped fighting to live... but his body just finally became worn out... and God decided to call him 'home' to his eternal rest. Richard (or 'Dick' as he was known) was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 30, 1939. He was the son of the late Henry Girard Lotspeich and Daisy McCants Lotspeich (both of Mississippi)... and is survived by his wife Rita Dwyer Lotspeich of Tomball, Texas; his daughter, Karen Kristen Lotspeich of Albany, New York; his sister, Betsy Lotspeich Feinhals of Mountain Home, Arkansas; his nephew, Christopher Cole Pinckard of Hillsboro, Oregon; and his niece, Julee Pinckard Fuentes of Corpus Christi, Texas. Dick served in the United States Army as a Specialist 4th Class for 3 years active duty from 1958-1961 and was honorably discharged in 1964. His fondest memory of his military service years was during the 2 years he spent training German Shepherd dogs in the Army's Canine Unit, while stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. Dick and his wife, Rita and their 6 month old daughter, Karen Kristen moved to Houston in June, 1967... when he accepted a position as a computer technician for Lockheed Electronics, NASA's largest contractor at what is now called the Johnson Space Center. He was thrilled to have had the opportunity of working in Mission Control on many of the Apollo flights... and felt especially privileged to be able to contribute in some small way to Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 Moon Landing Mission in July, 1969. In addition to his lifelong hobby of photography... he was also a serious model railroad enthusiast and enjoyed meeting his friends at various train shows and working as part of a team on various miniature train displays that were set up like little towns and villages. He was given a military burial with honors at Houston National Cemetery... which included the traditional 3 volley rifle salute; followed by the playing of "Taps"; and his widow being presented with the American flag.
