Sandra Elizondo

Sandra Lawson Elizondo, 68, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family and close friends on August 31, 2020 after a valiant three-year fight against Endometrial Carcinoma.
Sandra was born March 19, 1952 in Houston, TX to Nancy Smith Lawson and Donald R. Lawson. In her youth, she attended Garden Villas Elementary and was a graduate of Ross S. Sterling High School (1971). Throughout her youth, Sandra was a natural athlete and excelled in high school volleyball. Her 5'9" athletic long-legged lean frame and ability elevated her to varsity as a freshman. She also excelled at softball/baseball and badminton. A well-rounded person, Sandra was also a very gifted singer which landed her on the high school choir. Her time in the choir afforded her an artistic outlet doing what she loved. In keeping with her ever kind and loving heart for all, Sandra most valued spending her spare time riding the pastures with and caring for her beloved pinto quarter horse "Lady" and lady's sorrel foal "Pockets" - short for "empty pockets".
She built a career as a very knowledgeable automotive tools sales and purchasing manager she later applied that background to her work as a military equipment expediter. She was hard-working and genuinely valued doing a great job for those she served. Quality customer service came naturally to her and she applied her quick mind and even faster whit with effortless charm to her work and life with a demeanor and humor few possessed.
Sandra was a devoted mother to her two adored children, Angela Marie Elizondo Baxter and Rolando Benitez Elizondo, Jr (Rollie). Sandra never missed any of their events and truly found joy in living for them. Not a bragger, but a doer, while raising her children, she was able to display a wide array of talents that included sewing book report costumes, costumes for plays, presiding over dance rehearsals, coaching her kids in sports, and painting/building of toys to encourage the creativity of her children. She embraced every chance to make birthdays and holidays a decorated and festive time. Those examples have been instilled in her children as well. Sandra made a welcome environment for her children's friends to want to visit for bluebirds' meetings, slumber parties or just because. Sandra was unaware, but how she treated her children's friends made it clear to them that they were her kids, too. A strong woman, Sandra lead by example and her limitless support was instrumental in her children's many life successes.
Her unique, genuine and welcoming approach to life made her relatable and endeared by many, even by those who had not seen her in years. Her friendship is always remembered as well as her fierce loyalty. If someone was in Sandra's heart, she would literally go to the mat for that person well before doing it for herself. It's just who she was, and all those that were in her heart knew it and were better for it.
Sandra loved to follow her Houston sports teams Oilers, Rockets, and the Cougars, but always held the Astros in he dearest of places even when they were the "Lastros". She always made sure to have them on the TV or radio whenever humanly possible and passed this appreciation down to her son, whom learned the game and how to play the game from Sandra's uncanny knowledge and ability with the sport she so loved. It wasn't uncommon to see Sandra out throw grown men in her day, which was something to see. Her father a minor league pitcher in the Brooklyn Dodgers system made her his project and Sandra held her own in many backyard games of catch with a dad that did not let her gender become a limiting factor in how hard he expected her to play.
She enjoyed being of aid to others (human and non-human) and was a devoted blood donor in the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's "Commit for Life Program". Sandra never hesitated to help someone in need, her compassion was widespread and knew no limits.
Sandra is survived by her two children, her grandchildren, Graeme and Ellis, her daughter-in-law Jennifer Lynn Rivera and son-in-law Kent Baxter. She is also survived by her sisters, Cynthia Lawson and Kathy Lawson. Sandra was preceded in death by her brother Donald Lawson and parents Nancy Smith Lawson and Donald R. Lawson.
Due to COVID-19, her family will host a memorial to celebrate the life of Sandra at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Sandra's family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the worthy organization listed below:
