Scott Mccarty

May 8, 1961 — May 8, 2013

Scott Evan McCarty passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Scott was born on May 8, 1961, in Ocala, Florida, to Jim McCarty and Trudy McCarty. Scott graduated from Heritage High School in Conyers, GA, and Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN, with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. He worked as a civilian for the Naval Oceanographic Office at Stennis Space Center from 1984 until 2006. During this time he worked in Asia, Europe and Africa. After leaving NAVO, he formed his own small business and worked as a private contractor, performing hydrographic surveying and data processing in many locales, including Norway, New Zealand, and Scotland. Scott McCarty is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diane, his daughters Mallory and Madison, his parents Jim and Trudy McCarty, his sister Susette Kilgore, her husband Hugh and their sons Ben, Jon, Zach, and Nathan. He was loved like a son and brother by his wife's family, parents Richard and Betty DuRant, sisters Joanie Petty, her husband Jon, and their sons Matthew and Michael, and Janet Thomas, her daughters Tabatha, Tonya, and Tori, and her husband Jimmy. Scott grew up in Georgia and never quite lost his accent. He valued memories of visiting his grandparents in Ocala Florida, where they owned a motel with a pool. He also spent many happy summers in the mountains of Southwest Virginia with his aunts, uncles and cousins. Scott and his sister Susette made sure that their own children, the next generation of cousins, had vacations together when possible. Scott was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. His ability to fix anything was taken for granted by his family. He loved visiting all the different places in the world that he worked, but hated the actual plane travel that took him here. According to Scott, there was no such thing as a good flight. He very proud to have acquired a position at the Middle Eastern, European and African Office of NAVO, which enabled his family to live in London from 1996-2001. This posting also enabled many family members to visit Great Britain and Europe. The Kilgore boys will never forget Uncle Scott being "beheaded" at Warwick Castle and Betty will never forget the ride on the German autobahn, where Scott enjoyed the lack of speed limit. Scott's main love in life was his family. He insisted on a family vacation each summer, no matter how old the girls were, because "it may be our last chance". He was a loving, caring husband and a dad that would do anything for his girls. From the years of playing Easter bunny - with carrot scraps and dirt on the carpet - playing Santa - with a car race track that took up an entire room - to buying each girl's first (and second, and third....) car, to sending them off to college, he adored being Dad to Mallory and Maddy. When the teenage years arrived, friends of the girls would sometimes hang out in the living room to hear what Mr. Scott had to say - or wait anxiously for his Facebook comments. Scott had lots of favorite things. Scott loved chili dogs, People's Court, zombie movies, Reeses peanut butter cups, fixing anything broken, NPR, ordering things on Amazon, stirring up controversy on certain online forums, his pets - Marylebone "Mr. Barky Dog" and Gordon, his "big, white dog". He secretly loved but outwardly tolerated the cats, Cuddles and Roxy, as well as occasionally rubbing their fur the wrong way. But most of all, Scott loved his family. He will be missed. Visitation will be held at the McCarty home, Saturday May 11, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held at New Covenant United Methodist Church, The Villages, FL, on June 15, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to National Public Radio or the charity of your choice. ***When leaving a condolence message or posting a picture, if prompted, the Access Code is the word 'obit'.***
