Walter Saunders

Walter (Ed) E. Saunders, 80, born in Martinsville, VA on March 29, 1936, passed away on September 7, 2016, at his home in Spring, TX, with family by his side. Ed was a retired Air Force MSGT and served in Japan and Germany. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, 1967/1968, for which he earned a Bronze Star. He was also a USAF Drill Sergeant at Lackland Air Force Base for several years. After retiring from the Air Force, Ed worked for civil service for 25 years at Scott Air Force Base, Belleville IL. Ed was also a lifelong member of the V.F.W. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Walter Saunders, mother Lelia Saunders (Mills), Sister Ann Tolliver, wife Karen Saunders (Winker) and beloved daughter Donna Saunders. Ed is survived by daughter Magen Pearson, her husband Tony and granddaughter Layla of Spring, TX, son Dean Saunders and grandson Jason Saunders of Watauga, TX. Ed is also survived by brothers Charles "Buddy" Saunders and Thomas Saunders from Martinsville, VA. He had many nieces and nephews from Martinsville, VA and many friends from Belleville IL, in particular, Phillip and Sherie Catlett and their daughters Michelle Dersch and Sara Catlett. Funeral service will be held at VA Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209 on Friday, September 23, 2016, time to be determined. Burial will follow after service. Ed was an avid baseball fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals, but the Houston Astros were also starting to grow on him. He loved to listen to Classic Country music and enjoyed a good-natured argument over politics. Ed was loved by many and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society in Ed's memory.
