William Ostrander Jr.

April 25, 1953 — October 29, 2016

William (Bill) Gilbert Ostrander, Jr. (age 63) was born on April 25, 1953 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and passed away in Houston, Texas on October 29, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. He was son of June Nelson and William Gilbert Ostrander. After his parents divorce in 1956, Bill was a raised by a single mom - whom he loved dearly! She passed away only 3 months ago at the age of 94, but he was still devastated by her passing. Bill spent his childhood in Salt Lake City, Utah and as an adult lived in salt Lake City, UT; San Francisco, CA; Tempe, AZ; and Houston, TX. He has worked for Design Shutters for the past 23 years in Houston. His employer and co-workers helped and supported him through several years of cancer treatments, giving him the strength to face each day. And many thanks to his wonderful neighbors who cared and supported him with rides to treatments, help with his pets and just being wonderful friends! A niece, Colleen Hughes, wrote this tribute: Feeling heartbroken. I received the sad news today that we lost my Uncle Bill. This picture doesn't show a true reflection of him, because cancer had taken center stage on what people saw when they looked at him. But cancer is not who he was. He was one of the strongest people I knew. He fought a good fight & didn't give in to it. More than 5 years of severe treatments & he would still wake up & face it again & again. My Uncle Bill was a loyal, hardworking, opinionated, trustworthy & kind man. He loved his cats & was devoted to them. He had great style & loved a good house project (I take after him there). He loved art & music & architecture. He wanted to travel the world to see the beautiful diversity. My Uncle Bill was witty & a big tease. He was thrifty & yet had many beautiful things. He was the one who could get my fiesty grandma to calm down in a hurry (not always an easy task). He was my mom's baby brother, and more like a cousin to my sister than an Uncle. I remember him at many family gatherings when I was young. He nicknamed me Booger, and now I love it. He will be missed ❤️ Now you are no longer in pain, we love you. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his half-brothers Kenneth Neighbors and Michael Neighbors; and is survived by his sister, Julene Hoffman (Pleasant Grove, Utah) and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held for family in Salt Lake City, UT and interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Each to be scheduled at a future date.
