Willie Woody

December 1, 1920 — July 14, 2017

Willie Pearl (Meadows) Woody, also known as Billie and Memaw, 96, was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, born December 1, 1920 in Houston, Texas, to the late Conrad Meadows and Myrtle Ann Cunningham. She was one of six children. Willie accepted Christ as a young girl, and her faith defined her path the rest of her years. Willie lost her father as a young child to a car accident. She lived and grew up during the Great Depression, challenging times. Her mother worked at the church and a laundromat until taking a job at Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator. The children worked at home cooking and cleaning. Billie attended school through the 8th grade. As a teenager, she worked for the Betty company playing music over the radio while wearing roller skates as a part of her uniform. She later worked at Kress and Company, a five-and-dime retail store. It was there that she met her husband to be, Mike John Woody, a customer at Kress. Mike was in the US Navy, and in 1942, left for war. He was stationed on the USS Pennsylvania during World War II, and was in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Billie and Mike married in San Francisco the day he left for war. Mike periodically returned home on leave, and over the years Billie gave birth to 6 sons and 1 daughter. Two of her sons are twins, like her husband Mike and his brother Ike. Billie raised her children in a 2-story house on Spooner Street in old Pasadena near Highway 225. Billie took her children to church at South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena under the lead of Dr. B.J. Martin. After the war, Mike went to work for Shell Oil Company and retired after 45 years. Billie made sure the children had a life of fun and adventure while home with the kids. The children enjoyed memorable times visiting Shellwood, the local A&G Food store, the watermelon stand on Spooner, the Pasadena Bowling Alley, the Pasadena Roller Rink, and going to the movies at the Capitan. Billie was committed to her role as a homemaker. She worked fervently cooking great meals for her family. She was known for her home made southern cuisine including fried chicken, breakfast with biscuits and bacon, wiener stew, hamburgers with beans, turnip greens, and gravy. Billie had 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She loved all children, and some of her best days were taking her grandkids to Strawberry Park to swim, going for snow cones and Taco Bell, and spending the night at Memaw's house. Billie was about love. Her home and heart were open to all. She took pride in being the best mother and grandmother. No one met Billie who didn't immediately connect and reciprocate her love. In her senior years, Billie transferred her membership to First Baptist Church of Pasadena. Her latest Sunday School class, known as the Victory Class with ladies her same age, was dear to heart. Here she made dear friends, many who went to the Lord before her. At the end of each class, the ladies would recite a prayer that Billie took to heart: "may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight Oh Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer. Amen." Billie's greatest passion was her love for the Lord, and His message was spread to whomever she met. Her dying wish was for her children and grandchildren to know Jesus Christ as a personal savior and though Him, have eternal life. Billie's favorite bible verse was Psalm 23, and her favorite hymn was "In the Garden." Billie was healthy for most of her years, and only battled congestive heart failure the last few years of her life. She was cared for by her devoted daughter Mary, who never left Billie's side. During Billie's last two years, she was a patient of home hospice. She made the acquaintance of a dear friend and caretaker, Oscar Ortiz, who was present to the end. His friendship inspired her and brought joy during her last days. On July 14, 2017, Billie was called home to be with her Heavenly Father. She was preceded in death by her parents Conrad Meadows and Myrtle Ann Cunningham; sisters La Verne Meadows Carter, Mary Janel "Mary Nell" Meadows Stansbury, Peggy Meadows Grant, and son James Conrad Woody.
