Dixie Carey

Dixie Barrett Carey passed away peacefully on Friday, March 16 at the age of 97 in Houston, Texas. Dixie was born on October 20, 1920 to William Anthony and Sarah Ethel Barnes Barrett. She was predeceased by her cherished husband, John Curtis Carey, Jr. She was the youngest sister of Margaret Jeanette Barrett McCoy and Hugh Anthony Barrett, both deceased.Dixie and John were married for 58 years and were the proud and devoted parents of seven surviving children: John A. Carey and wife Julie, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Jenna Alcott and husband Forbes, of Houston, Texas; Nada Carey of Tallahassee, Florida; Hugh Carey and wife Barbara, of New Haven, Connecticut; Brett Carey of Ivoryton, Connecticut; Kellen Carey and wife Araceli, of Oaxaca, Mexico; and Roane Carey of New York, New York; and eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.Dixie was born in the small Wilcox County community of Sibbie, Georgia and raised in Barwick, Georgia. Her mother died when she was age two and her father died when she was age four. She was raised by her Aunt Abbie, Aunt Cad, and Uncle John. She graduated from high school in Barwick at age 14 and from the Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia College) in 1939 at age 18. She taught high school in small towns in Georgia and South Carolina for seven years. In 1946, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia and worked as an airline scheduler and hospital admissions director. She married her husband, John, in Atlanta, in 1950. John, of Pickens, South Carolina, was a corporation attorney, and the family lived in Atlanta; Columbia, South Carolina; and Birmingham, Alabama. John and Dixie retired to the Texas Hill Country in 1984. John died in 2008.Dixie loved her children; bridge; reading; cooking; nature and the environment; hiking; traveling; and volksmarching. She will be remembered fondly for the love of her children, her warmth, smile, and roaring, infectious laugh. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make contributions to the charity of their choice.
